A recent article, ‘Our phones and gadgets are now endangering the planet’, written by John Harris, a columnist at The Guardian; has reported that the energy used in our digital consumption is set to have a bigger impact on global warming.
In the last decade there has been an increase in the amount of energy used by data centres, and it is expected to triple in the next 10 years, due to demands by consumers for constant and easy communication and streaming.
It was reported that only a small amount of electricity used in data centres come from credible renewable sources. The article continues by suggesting that by 2040 the entire communication technology industry could account for up to 14% of carbon emissions – which is more than the entire aviation industry.
