Of the 338 million acres of privately-owned timberland in the U.S., the South, Appalachia, Midwest, Northeast and Northwest account for 55 percent, 12 percent, 12 percent, 11 percent and 10 percent, respectively, as shown in figure 3.2. Of the 125 million acres of publicly-owned timberland in the U.S., the Northwest, South, Midwest, Appalachia and Northeast account for 49 percent, 23 percent, 17 percent, 7 percent and 4 percent, respectively, as shown in figure 3.3.
